St Peter’s Harrogate

Bach St Matthew Passion Online

As part of our Holy Week devotions, on Wednesday 8th April at 7:15 pm, we will stream last year's recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, performed by our own Church choir augmented by Vocalis (Harrogate's premier chamber choir), six excellent soloists, and the professional Harrogate Bach Players.

The work tells the story of the last days of Jesus Christ, including the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, his betrayal and arrest, Peter's denial, Jesus appearing before Pilate, his crucifixion and death, and the laying of Jesus's body in the tomb.  The story is told through music by an Evangelist, with dramatic interjections from the other soloists and chorus.  Throughout the work there are reflective arias and chorales which contemplate the part of the story just related.  This is a marvellous opportunity to experience a familiar story enhanced by descriptive music, alongside moments of reflection upon what the story should mean to us today.

This St Matthew Passion features a new English translation (included on screen) which aims to combine the imagery of the original German with minimal alteration to Bach's music.  Join us by one of the following means:

This online event replaces the scheduled performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor.  However, the performance has been rescheduled for Wednesday 31st March 2021 and any tickets already bought for the performance in April will of course be valid next year, when we looking forward to presenting this incomparable masterpiece.
