Director of Music and Organist

John studied piano, organ, harmony and counterpoint with his father Jack, and gained his FRCO on his seventeenth birthday. He held the position of Organ Scholar at Girton College, Cambridge, from 1979-1983. He has held full-time posts as rehearsal pianist and ballet conductor at the Opera House in Kiel, Germany, and with Northern Ballet Theatre. He has been Musical Director of the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra since 1993 and is active as a freelance arranger and copyist. John joined St Peter’s as its organist in 2003 and took over the role of Director of Music from brother Oliver in 2012.  He plays for the 11.00am and 6.30pm services every Sunday, and for weddings and funerals as required.  For further information please see his website www.johnlongstaff.co.uk, or if you’d like to get in touch with him you can send him an email.

  • Bible RefleXions starts this week

    This informal study group meets on Wednesdays during term time  at 9:30 am in the Undercroft. The new term starts with: A Journey into the Old Testament. This week the first session asks: Why read the Old Testament? Everyone is welcome.

    Asda’s green token scheme provides funding for local charities and good causes. St Peter’s Breakfast Club has been nominated by Angela Smith, Community Champion at Asda Harrogate, as one of this month’s charities.     Experienced, part-time Cleaner/General Assistant required for seven hours per week – Tuesdays 2:00 – 6:00pm and Saturdays 3:00 – 6:00pm.
